Life on the farm is never short of entertainment. Cattle can be hilarious, and this week was no exception. Summer means fly season, so managing cattle means prioritizing their comfort and health. While many farmers gather their cows to spray them for flies, we take a different approach here on our farm.

Instead of chasing them down, we lure them with something they adore—corn. As soon as they hear the ranger's engine, they come running, knowing a sweet treat awaits them. While they munch happily, we ensure they get a thorough spray to keep the flies away. It’s a win-win: they enjoy their snack, and we get the satisfaction of seeing them comfortable and relaxed. Watching their antics brings a smile to my face. Farming may be hard work, but these moments remind me why I put in the effort.

The Joy of Cattle Management

Cattle management requires time and patience—it is a journey without shortcuts. Each day brings unique challenges and opportunities to connect with our animals. Their personalities shine brightly, from their playful interactions to their curious behaviors.

The bond between farmer and cattle grows through trust and understanding. By using corn as a lure, we ensure a positive experience for the cows, making them more likely to engage with us. This method not only ensures their comfort but also deepens our bond with them. It serves as a gentle reminder that farming is not just about crops or livestock; it's about nurturing life and building meaningful connections.

The Art of Baking: A Family Tradition

Just as cattle bring joy with their quirky personalities, my family’s oatmeal rolls fill the kitchen with their comforting aroma. Baking requires patience and love, qualities that shine through in these oatmeal rolls. For example, the process involves mixing the dough, waiting for it to rise, shaping each roll, letting it rise again and finally baking them to a perfect golden brown. While this isn’t a quick task, the delicious outcome makes every effort worthwhile.

Each ingredient is measured with care, and every step is executed thoughtfully. The anticipation rises as the dough doubles in size, filling our home with tempting scents. When the rolls come out of the oven, golden and fluffy, the joy is palpable.

Recipe: Oatmeal Rolls (A Family Favorite)

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups milk, warmed

  • 4 ½ tsp yeast (2 packets)

  • ¼ cup sugar

  • 1 ½ cups old-fashioned oats (not quick cooking)

  • ½ cup salted butter, melted

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 2 eggs

  • 5 ½–6 cups flour

Topping:

  • 2 tbsp salted butter, melted

Instructions:

  1. Activate the yeast: In a large mixing bowl, combine warm milk, oats, sugar, and yeast. Stir, then let rest for about 10 minutes, until the mixture is bubbly.

  2. Build the dough: Stir in 2 cups of flour along with the melted butter, salt, and eggs. Mix until smooth.

  3. Add flour gradually: Add the remaining flour, 1 cup at a time, until a soft dough forms. You may not need all the flour—stop when the dough is soft and slightly tacky.

  4. Knead: Knead the dough for 5 minutes in a stand mixer or 10 minutes by hand, until smooth and elastic.

  5. First rise: Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled in size (about 1–1 ½ hours).

  6. Shape the rolls: Gently punch down the dough and divide into 4 equal parts. Cut each part into 6 pieces (24 rolls total). Shape into smooth balls and place on a greased baking sheet. For soft sides, place them close together; for crustier rolls, space them apart.

  7. Second rise: Cover and let rolls rise again for 30–45 minutes, until puffy.

  8. Bake: Just before baking, brush tops lightly with melted butter. Bake at 400°F for 15–18 minutes, until golden.

  9. Finish: Brush with more melted butter when they come out of the oven. Cool slightly on a wire rack before serving.

The Connection Between Cattle and Comfort Food

Cattle and homemade rolls illustrate the heart of farm life. They embody the values of hard work, patience, and the joy of nurturing. Just as we care for our cattle, we take pride in creating meals that comfort our families.

The laughter shared while watching the cows and the warmth of fresh rolls foster a strong sense of belonging. These moments make farm life special, reminding us that even in challenges, joy can be found in the simple pleasures.

Cattle may keep us on our toes, and rolls may keep us waiting for the dough to rise, but both fill life with joy and reward. Here’s to the laughter in the pasture and the warmth in the kitchen.
